McKee Wrap Up
The McKee Trophy was held at the South Boston Yacht club on 13-14 September, 2014. We had an eight boat fleet with some great conditions. The McKee traditionally is a three race event. Two races on Saturday and one held on Sunday. The extreme high tides of the new moon (12’ in range), made for some interesting tactical decision with plenty of breeze to make for some very competitive racing.
Saturday we had a fresh Easterly of 12-15 Knots. The race Committee did a great job setting a short and square starting line. They utilized the wind direction to make use of all of the harbor in both races allowed for some awesome racing. The wind was shifty with constant 10-15 degree shifts rolling down the bay that made for some tough decisions.
On Sunday we had a complete shift in the wind around to a Northerly. This allowed for the use of not only Boston Bay but also a run that brought us down all the way under the Long Island Bridge and through Quincy Bay right down to the entrance to Hingham Bay The Northerly in Boston is notoriously a shifty/ gusty breeze and it lived up to every bit of that. We had velocities from 10-17 knots and shifts as large as 30 degrees. In conditions such as these, it allowed for lead changes, and passing lanes up and down the course.
On top of the great sailing we had the pleasure of enjoying a steak dinner, plenty of beverages, and the world famous “Kostka Chowder”. We had the pleasure of welcoming a few new faces to the class as Mark Deshong loaned his boat to Niko Kotsatos and his wife Carolyn. The also had Colin Henderson aboard who many of you know is Sue Epstien’s grandson. The new blood is a welcome sight to a classic 210 event. Rumor has it #460 will be sailing in the Boston Bay fleet next season. If you have not attended a McKee Trophy , then you it is advisable that you do so at the earliest possible chance.
Great job to all the competitors and Race Committee at South Boston
