P Memorial Weekend 2013P
Memorial Day Weekend is the Official start of the sailing season at the South Boston Yacht Club. This is a two day event: 2 races on Sunday and 1 race on Monday after the Memorial Services at the club. On Sunday there were four boats on the starting line. One of the boats was Tom Lemaire boat #444 from Newport the rest of the fleet was from the S.B.Y.C.: Mark DeShong boat # 461, Brion Keefe boat #108 and Nick Simon with boat #357 that has not been in the water for a few years. On Sunday and Monday the breeze was from the Northwest so that meant shifty and puffy conditions and was that true for Sunday.
At the start of the first race the breeze was about 15-20 with gusts 25+ boat # 108 Brion Keefe broke a main halyard so he sailed home on his jib. So three boats sailed to the first mark and started down boat #357 Nick Simon broke a spinnaker pole and he also had a halyard problem so now the fleet was just Tom Lemaire #444 and Mark DeShong #461 for the rest of the day. The breeze was getting stronger and during the second race of that day Tom Lemaire #444 took on a lot of water and had to make an unplanned downwind run to let his boat bail out. Mark DeShong won both races this day. After the races both #357 and #108 pulled their mast to try to fix their halyard problems but they could not. Mondays race the breeze was a little lighter and only #444 and #461 were ready to race. Tom Lemaire #444 won Monday’s race. After the races some of the crew had raw hands and one of them told me that Sunday’s second race was the fastest he had ever gone downwind.
1. Mark DeShong #461
2. Tom Lemaire #444
Brion Keefe #108
Nick Simon #357
