First, First Chance to Showcase Class in Newport
The innauguaral First Chance Clinic and Regatta takes place this weekend in the vicinity of Newport Harbor. Hosted out of Sail Newport, teams will be shedding off their winter tarps and lubing up their blocks and rigging, to make the first season splash.
Oakley Jones the 210 Class elected President shares his excitement for the event. “This really is a great event for the class. Playing on a long standing tradition of the ‘Last Chance’ event in the late fall, this event brings what every sailor wants in the spring, time to work on their skills and boat.”
The annual Newport Regatta in the middle of summer was a welcomed treat for 210’ers for the couple of years the class was invited down to Newport. But with a new spark set by a couple of local sailors, this event is set to show a sailing town a boat that is worth racing. Tom Lemaire, a local sailor from Newport, RI is chairing the event with the help from another long time 210’er, Dave Johnson Jr of Pawtucket, RI. Together they hope to show people that the class is not going away!
“We really want people to see these boats,” says Tom Lemaire. “They are great to sail in almost any condition and give a challenge to those that want to race in a competitive one design class. Who else can own a classic 30′ one-design for under $5k?”
While the class tries out this new event over the weekend, they have also showed face in Sailing World’s May issue as the Harken One-Design Boat of the month. On top of a brand new website for the class, it looks like they ready for 2012 and attracting new sailors to the classic hard chine boat from 1945.
